Wikipedia made me laugh, and pissed me off.

So, apparently, AQ2 is credited with bringing the work "Akimbo" to the gaming realms, and essentially coining a new use for said word, which was neat. That part made me laugh.

The second part, the one that pissed me off, is the order of the credits for the Action Quake 2 entry. Its entered like this:
Code: Select all
    Patrick "Bartender" Mills: Direction, Sound
Dallas "Suislide" Frank: Skinning, Modeling, Web

It is notable that Suislide may be the most recognizable name in AQ2. Default config files have "Suislide" set as the player name, often identifying newbies who have not learned to customize their player settings. The name also gave way to the term Suislide hack (Formed by the misconception that Suislide had purposefully or accidentally coded cheats in AQ2, by players unable to explain advanced techniques, such as strafe jumping or kicking; this also lead to the term being used in humor).

Sam "Cail" Thompson: Coding Lead, Mapping, Modeling, Sound
    Minh "Gooseman" Le: Modeling, Coding

The creator of Counter-Strike, was a part of the team that created Action Quake 2. He was the weapons modeler for the team. His peculiar habit of modeling right-handed weapons as used by left-handed people (so the ejection port faces the player) is first seen here and is brought to Counter-Strike. Prior to AQ2, Minh worked on a counterterrorism-based mod for Quake 1, called Navy Seals.

    Nathan "Pietro" Kovner: Coding
    Jon "Vain" Delee: Skinning
    Evan "Ace12GA" Prentice: Mapping

I'm not pissed because I'm in last place, that would be petty. I'm pissed because Bartender and Suislide are credited over Cail, who really did most of the work, and who really ran the mod back then. This is how it should read:

Code: Select all
Sam "Cail" Thompson: Direction, Coding Lead, Mapping, Modeling, Sound
    Patrick "Bartender" Mills: Direction, Sound
    Nathan "Pietro" Kovner: Direction, Coding
    Jon "Vain" Delee: Direction, Skinning
    Evan "Ace12GA" Prentice: Direction, Mapping
    Minh "Gooseman" Le: Modeling, Coding
Dallas "Suislide" Frank: Skinning, Modeling, Web

Why you ask? Because that's the correct bloody order. The four lads started it, I joined up a month in, followed by Gooseman a month or so down the road from that. Suislide joined up a couple of months after that. I'm annoyed for a number of reasons, but the main one is that Action all started because of Cail, and Unreal DM. Seriously, that's what started it. To bill him 3rd in those credits is an insult, especially to bill Suislide above him.

I'm going to go fume in a corner.

Yea just edit it. Or first write an article about it, publish it on the net and then quote it on wikipedia.

I know I can edit those pages, and I also know that one or two people are probably camping that page and will edit it right back to the way it is.

That's why I stopped playing AQ2 on Wikipedia's servers. Too many damn campers, sniping your edits at the last minute.

Well edit it anyway and see what happens, you big sissy!

People probably just did a cut and paste from 1.52's readme anyway. The order of the credits there wasn't "right" either, was it?

I should not only listed ahead of all of you, I should be highlighted and have a bigger font that has big RED FUCKING LETTERS!!!

Ok maybe I just didn't know this, but it normal goes the most important programmer or whatever gets listed first? Is that true? Hey I'm not being a wise ass here I never made a video game before. This is a legit question, does the most important slash hardest worker get listed first is that how it is normally done?

TELL ME!!!!

PoP! :pissed: <--- Now known as RealPop on quake live because some asshole took my fucking name.

don't know how this is normally handled with video games, but movie posters usually list stars and crew ordered by importance, i.e. how big a part they play or how much their work influenced the film.
though there are exceptions for some stars, who always receive top billing (get listed first), no matter how big a part they play, because they are oh so famous.

Yeah, that's a tough one. Even professional developers have a real bitch of a time trying to figure out how to order the credits, how to label people, and so on. There's never any way to make everybody happy, because titles don't adequately reflect what the individuals contributed.

The best approach I've seen is to list people by the primarily role - programmer, designer, artist. Identify the "Lead" for each area, and he gets listed first. Then each of his team members are listed thereafter in alphabetical order, and that's it. Very sterile, very "matter-of-fact", with the only people getting special attention being the leads and bigwigs. Everybody else is put on the same playing field.

But even THAT gets messy. It's ridiculous, these damn credits.

Lol, seriously dude, get a life. That was a long ass time ago and it's a wikipedia entry. Also, often things are listed in "no particular order". Would you really feel that much better if wikipedia stated that first just so that people didn't get it twisted how important you were?

Suislide had a cooler name than you, it's no big deal, but these things matter... why do you think all those jews changed their names when they went to Hollywood?

Weren't you working on some new action-like game? How's that going? Will it run on integrated graphics? :P

Who was the guy who did the port to the dedicated linux server, I can't remember his name? I know he wasn't part of the A-team but he optimized the server code quite a bit.

Wait, how is this my first post?
